Clotting disorders can be inherited. People who inherit a clotting disorder have an increased risk of developing blood clots if they do not take anti-clotting medications as prescribed. Inherited disorders may cause problems with the ways that red blood cells, platelets, and clotting factors work together to stop bleeding. Some people inherit a disorder that makes their blood clot more easily. This condition, on its own, might not cause blood clots unless combined with one or more of the other risk factors. People with these disorders have a higher risk of developing a blood clot in the veins. If you or a family member have an inherited clotting disorder, you may need to follow certain lifestyle changes and/ or take specific medications from a vascular physician to help reduce your risk of blood clots.
